The Department of Intracavitary and Interstitial Radiation Therapy is the first and only department in Armenia providing contact radiation therapy—brachytherapy—for the treatment of malignant neoplasms.

Main Clinical Services

The Department provides:

• Intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy for gynecologic malignancies, including cervical, endometrial, and vaginal cancers, using 2D and 3D image guidance
• Endoluminal brachytherapy for rectal cancer
• Radiomodification with chemotherapeutic agents in accordance with current clinical guidelines

Treatment Programs

Cervical Cancer:

• Definitive combined radiation therapy
• Combined radiation therapy with radiomodification using platinum-based agents
• Postoperative combined radiation therapy with or without radiomodification

Endometrial Cancer:

• Definitive combined radiation therapy
• Combined radiation therapy with radiomodification using platinum-based agents
• Postoperative combined radiation therapy with or without radiomodification
• Brachytherapy as monotherapy
• Palliative brachytherapy
• Individualized treatment of recurrent disease, including re-irradiation
• Individualized management of radiation-related complications

Rectal Cancer:

• Endoluminal brachytherapy for residual tumors or recurrent disease

Department Equipment

The Department is equipped with advanced brachytherapy and imaging systems, including:

• MicroSelectron HDR system with an Iridium-192 source (Genie), designed for 2D gynecologic brachytherapy
• SagiNova system by BEBIG, using a Cobalt-60 source, designed for 3D intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy with CT and MRI image guidance
• C-arm X-ray system for treatment planning and topometric procedures

The MicroSelectron HDR system offers several important advantages:

• High treatment throughput
• Improved patient comfort due to shorter treatment sessions
• The possibility of outpatient treatment

The system enables highly precise brachytherapy, allowing the maximum tumoricidal dose to be delivered to the target while minimizing radiation exposure to surrounding organs and tissues.

Treatment is provided by a highly specialized multidisciplinary team, including CT, MRI, and ultrasound specialists, anesthesiologists, radiation oncologists specializing in brachytherapy, radiation therapists, medical physicists, and other healthcare professionals.

The system is unique not only in Armenia but also among neighboring countries.

The Department's specialists maintain close collaboration with leading research institutions and clinics in several European countries and regularly participate in professional seminars and international conferences.
